Ye emperors, kings, dukes, and all other people desirous of knowing the diversities of the races of mankind, take this book and cause it to be read to you. Here you shall find all the great wonders and curiosities of the East—of the lands of the Saracens and the Tartars, of India, and of many another country. I, Marco Polo, set down what I saw with my own eyes, and what I heard from men of credit; so that our book may be exact, and without any sort of falsehood. And when I came before the Great Khan in his city of Cambaluc, I beheld a court so rich and a city so vast that no tongue could fully tell of it.
