As Gregor Samsa woke one morning from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous insect. He lay on his armour-hard back and saw, as he lifted his head a little, his domed brown belly divided into stiff arched segments. The bedding could hardly stay in place on top of it and seemed ready to slide off completely. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked. "What has happened to me?" he thought. It was no dream.
